Day 31: Fredericksburg (VA) – Washington DC

Short summary (Apr 28th, 2022):
To reach Washington, we cycled around 66 miles / 106 km in about 9.5 hrs against a cold headwind. The first time on this trip, we did over 3‘000 ft / 1‘000 hm in a day.
In the morning, we followed smaller roads for about 15 miles as suggested by the greenway route. Then we took A1 for about 30 miles and returned afterwards for around 20 miles on smaller roads and bike routes.

This morning started cold (temperatures below 10 degree Celsius, 50 Fahrenheit) with a chilly wind from the north. Therefore, we put on all layers we have with us. Funny enough – on the parking of the supermarket signs warned that heat could kill animals …

After the smaller roads, we went onto US1 – that had quite some traffic, lots of hills and lights to make progress harder. We passed amongst other towns Quantico – well-known for the marines base and of course with a marines statue.

After that, we arrived at Mount Vernon, the historic home of George Washington with lots of visitors.

Then the beautiful Mount Vernon Trail, that brought us over almost 18 miles directly into central Washington with our hotel. First a few impressions from the trail along the Potomac River and Alexandria.

Then we passed Ronald Reagan National Airport.

To finally arrive in Washington DC.

And yes – some arrival-pictures 🙂

As we‘ll stay for two days in Washington, we brought our bikes to the local Trek shop in Georgetown to have them revisited.

Abwechslungsreiche Fahrt und viele historische Plätze.
Ein bisschen Erholung tut auch gut!
