The project

From March 29th, 2022 until May 31st, 2022, we cycled the United States East Coast from Key West (Florida) until Calais (Maine) along the route proposed by the East Coast Greenway. We decided to go south to north due to the temperatures in this time of the year. Overall, it was a great experience for us to get to know the United States cycling through 15 states.

Arriving in Calais

We created this blog to have a travel journal and to share our experiences with our family and friends. Maybe it can help others to plan their trip on the East Coast Greenway, especially the following parts:

  • The Greenway Stages Overview page details the sections, we did per day. We did not plan them in advance but typically a few days ahead depending on the weather and our condition.
  • The Greenway section contains the daily journal with a summary as well as lots of photos and links.
  • We noted down Our Favorites on a separate page.
  • In the T1 section is information about my way of cycling with t1. Please note that these are my personal observations and not meant as medical advice as I‘m am not a HCP.

About us

Claudia, 47, Swiss, living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1)
Christoph, 50, Austrian, living in Switzerland

We spend our vacations mostly on our bikes since more than 10 years. We did already three longer trips in Europe in France, Spain and Italy – the Eastcoast Greenway is our first long-distance journey in the United States.

Wie immer die gesammelten Katastrophen von fast alle http://Stuetzredli.ch. Merci viumal Manuel. 🦄😊 – und sorry, keine Beiträge diesmal …

Our equipment

For this trip, we cycled both on Trek Checkpoint SL7 Bikes (2020 models). Our tubeless gravel tires were well suited for the sometimes rough roads with sometimes gravel and debris on the shoulder/bike lane. We had equipped our bikes with good rearview mirrors, good rear lights and oval chainrings. Our baggage was around 30 pounds / 15 kg. And no – we were not camping but we stayed in hotels or B&Bs.

If you have any questions – drop us a comment and we‘ll come back to you.
