Day 28: South Hill – Petersburg

Short summary (Apr 25th, 2022):
Until Petersburg, we did around 72 miles / 116 km in about 8.5 hrs on the road with nice, but quite warm weather.
We started on the Tobacco Heritage Trail for about 20 miles until Lawrenceville, the around 10 miles on smaller roads to Alberta followed by about 20 miles on an empty A1 and finally again around 20 miles on smaller roads until Petersburg.

This morning started very relaxed on the Tobacco Heritage Trail, a former railroad of the Atlantic & Danville Railroad, until Lawrenceville.

After this section, again some nice small roads until Alberta.

Here we were back again on A1 (well known from the Florida Keys) – but here with almost no traffic. The A1 follows the route of the Boydton Plank Road, that was established in the early 1850s. This section went until Dinwiddie.

Then again some smaller roads until Petersburg.

In this section, we came to the Memorial of the Battle of White Oaks Road of Civil War with some parts of the Confederate defense lines still visible.

Staying with Civil War – the Siege of Petersburg was an important episode in the last phase of this war anticipating to a certain extend the trench warfare of WWI. More remainders of this war similar to White Oaks Road are displayed at the Petersburg National Battlefield close to Fort Lee.

But we had a much better more pleasant experience in Petersburg – Trapezium Brewing with very good beer, good pizza and a nice atmosphere.

And – if we‘re counting the miles correctly – this was probably about half-time of our East Coast Greenway ride.

    Aha, Bier!! 😋

Hab ich eigentlich schon angemerkt, dass ich als Mitbringsel von jeder Sorte gerne eins hätte? 😉

    Und Gratulation zur 1/2-time! 💪🚲
