Day 16: Port Royal – Charleston

Short summary (Apr 13th, 2022):
With about 81 miles / 130 km the longest stage so far (mostly side-winds), we took about 9 hrs for it.
The first around 25 miles were quite nice with the Spanish Moss Trail after Port Royal and then some smaller roads. Then around 20 exhausting miles on US17, then for about 15 miles a mixture between smaller roads and US17 and finally the West Ashley Greenway that brought us into Charleston.

This morning started not so good – Christoph‘s Bike had a flat tire. After some investigations, we found the guilty – a small piece of wire. Having removed it with tweezers and refilled the tire with rubber milk, we were able to close the little hole and start into the day. And also the breakfast in the hotel was rather poor ..

The first part were around 10 miles on the Spanish Moss Trail (with a little detour due to works on the trail) and then some smaller roads. We also passed the Naval Airbase and refilled our bottles with a 50:50 mix of Gatorade and water giving them nice colors …

Then the more exhausting part started on US17 – with the last around 3 miles without a shoulder. We then just took the right lane (with our strong taillights flashing and constantly checking our mirrors). The US drivers are typically very considerate and we faced no critical situations. In the middle, we had a short lunch break and after this section, there were again some smaller roads.

Finally, we reached the West Ashley Greenway that took us safely into Charleston.

Some first impressions of Charleston walking to …

Chucktown Brewery for some well-deserved beer and food.
