Day 8: Melbourne Beach – Mims

Short summary (Apr. 5th, 2022):
Roughly 60 miles / 95 km (incl 8 miles / 13 km detour to visit Port Canaveral), 7.5 hrs on the road, some tail wind.
Following the A1A was ok, but not that great. After crossing the Indian River, a very nice ride following the Indian River Drive. Then again along A1 with a broad bike lane and finally a very nice bike road from Titusville to Mims.

As our hotel served breakfast “only“ at 0800, we started a little later than the last days and had the opportunity to enjoy the sunrise.

Then we continued on A1A leaving the Eastcoast Greenway route as Christoph wanted to go to Port Canaveral to see if one would see parts of the Space Center. On the road, we had a nice coffee (real espresso :-)).

Short side note – we had checked the rocket launch schedule of the Kennedy Space Center and originally, there was a launch scheduled for Apr 6th that would have fitted our plans.

But yesterday, we saw that it was postponed to Apr 8th. Therefore, we decided not to wait and just to have some peeks on the facility.

Back to our trip – no view on the Space Center from Port Canaveral.

But our detour was not a complete miss – a big cruise ship just arrived allowing for some impressive photos. And for us, this ship looked a bit like a prison boat – but judge yourself:

We then turned back and passed the Indian River arriving back at the east coast greenway at a very nice road in a pretty residential area.

This was then followed by a section on A1 with finally some good views to the Kennedy Space Center.

And finally, a nice bike road (probably a former railroad track) from Titusville to Mims. In Mims, we stayed at the Waywards Traveler’s Inn, a super nice B&B.
